POLISCI 346S
The Logic of Authoritarian Government

Autumn 2003-2004

If authoritarianism is less economically efficient than democracy, and if authoritarianism is a less stable form of political organization than democracy, then why, as a matter of history, do we observe more authoritarian governments than democracies? To answer the question, students read both the theoretical and empirical literature on authoritarian governments, as well as related literatures on the microeconomic analysis of property rights and credible commitments.
